Mental Health: Keeping the Eyes and Ears to Save the Brain

Dear colleagues, there is no Nigerian who will hear or watch the gory incidences of black Tuesday, 20th October, 2020 at Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos and will not feel disturbed. Whoever is indifferent to such a gruesome murder is not human.

However, there is a need to safeguard our brains from the impacts of these incidences. The eyes and ears are the major gateways to the brain at this period. It should be guided and guarded to protect the brain.

Most Nigerians are psychologically disturbed at the moment. A continuous involvement in hearing or watching incidences of this magnitude could insult the brain on the long run. Some could develop sleep disorders, anxiety, panic attack, post-traumatic stress disorders, etc among myriads of other mental health challenges.

To safeguard the brain from psychological disorders at this period, do the following:

1. Desist from hearing or watching gory cases of death, injured, gun shot and the likes.

2. Take a break off the social media for a while.

3. Seek help if your mood is negatively affected already.

4. Get a good sleep in quality and quantity.

5. Eat adequate diet at the right time.

6. Keep hope aglow by substituting faith (spiritual-consolation) for fears (worries) that better days are ahead.

'Mental health is a total health! There is no health without mental health.'
